Hi Prefect Team, We are Saas Platform company and would like to use OpenSource Version of Perfect. As Prefect Core is Apache License we should be good to go. I would like to get some clarification on Prefect Server and UI. How we will use Prefect in our SaaS Platform? We are planning to use it for DataScience PipeLine , our user will not directly use the prefect UI or Server, which will be internal to our company. Our Users will register the flow from JupyterNote book. Will the Prefect Community License allow this use case or not?

Hi @Gopinath Jaganmohan, I think you should be fine as long as you don’t make a competing Prefect product but I will ask the team and get back to you tomorrow.
I talked to the team and Prefect Server and UI is free for use if the users are in the same company as you. If you have people outside your company (such as customers) registering flows, then that is outside the spirit of the license. If you are providing orchestration and earning from it, that is outside the spirit of the license also and you would need a Cloud license. If you need to chat more, you can contact sales@prefect.io, and they can work something out with you

@Kevin Kho Thanks for the clarification.

@Kevin Kho Hi I'm selecting my workflow orchestration tool for my analytics saas app that I'm building now and I'd really like to use it but I need more clarification on the license. The above mentions
If you have people outside your company (such as customers) registering flows, then that is outside the spirit of the license
And I'm thinking to use prefect for internal data flow tasks for our customer's analytics needs. Our customers would register or trigger analytics flows partially using Prefect through our service (not directly from Predict server or UI). Am I violating the license? I saw your CEO mentioning about license on Hackernews and I thought I'm okay using it because I won't be creating another workflow orchestration platform but I'm not sure looking at your comment here..
I'm comparing tools such as airflow, argo, flyte, dagster etc and really like Prefect so really hoping to use it ❤️

Unfortunately, I think that would be a violation of the license as that is what Gopinath was asking. The license limits to people within the same company using Prefect to run workflows. In this situation, it would be customers using it and Prefect being used to provide a service.

Okay that's unfortunate but thanks, will pick another tool then!
